With 99% of votes counted by 11:45 p.m. (2145 GMT), the opposition People's Party (PP) had 136 seats while Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's ruling Socialists (PSOE) had 122 seats. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called a surprise snap election after the left took a drubbing in local elections in May. In the present scenario, Sanchez' PSOE would rely heavily on Catalan separatist parties Junts and ERC or Basque separatists EH Bildu. In 2019, two more elections were held before the PSOE and far-left Podemos agreed to form Spain's first coalition government.

Voting opened at 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) and will close at 8 p.m. (1800 GMT), when exit polls will be released. The final result is expected to be decided by fewer than a million votes and fewer than 10 seats in the 350-seat parliament, experts say. Opinion polls show the election will likely produce a win for Alberto Nunez Feijoo's centre-right People's Party, but to form a government it will need to partner with Santiago Abascal's far-right Vox. This would be the first time a far-right party entered government since Francisco Franco's dictatorship ended in the 1970s. The postal service reported on Saturday that postal votes had set an all-time record of 2.47 million, as many people choose to cast their ballot from the beach or mountains.

Crowds stretching for at least a mile marched with banners reading “Free, European Poland,” “European Union yes, PiS no,” referring to the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party. People march on the 34th anniversary of the first democratic elections in postwar Poland, in Warsaw on June 4, 2023. On Sunday, hundreds of buses arrived in Warsaw to bring opposition supporters from across the country. The opposition sees the legislation as a government attempt to launch a witch hunt against political opponents. “It’s beyond comprehension,” said Andrzej Majewski, 48, from Slupca in western Poland who was in Warsaw to join Sunday’s protest march

On Sunday, hundreds of buses were arriving in Warsaw to bring opposition supporters from across the country. Some said they were motivated by a row over legislation proposed by PiS to weed out undue Russian influence from the country. WASHINGTON, April 15 (Reuters) - Three women are seen as the top contenders to become the European Central Bank's new supervisory chief, with Germany's Claudia Buch considered the clear favorite, conversations with a dozen sources with direct knowledge indicate. The ECB oversees just over a hundred of the euro zone's biggest banks and needs to pick a new top supervisor to replace Andrea Enria. His five-year term expires at the end of this year, just as sharply rising interest rates challenge banks' business models. Donnery, a deputy governor at Ireland's central bank, is seen as more of a long shot, the sources said. The sources added that the selection process has yet to start, so all discussions about the candidates are still informal.

FRANKFURT, March 10 (Reuters) - Bundesbank Vice President Claudia Buch was appointed on Friday to the European Central Bank's Supervisory Board, less than one year before board chair Andrea Enria's term of office expires. The reshuffle at the German central bank comes after Wuermeling decided to leave at the end of the year to take up another job, prompting Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel to assign new board responsibilities effective April 1. The new chair of the Supervisory Board, due to take office in January, is picked by the ECB's 26-member Governing Council and will be formally appointed by the European Union Council following the approval of the European Parliament. Buch, already responsible for financial stability issues, will remain the Bundesbank's vice president.
